Project of Life: The Water Desalination Solution by TEMAK

The new water desalination plant by TEMAK in the Municipality of Argos – Mycenae represents a major infrastructure project, providing a definitive solution to the municipality’s water supply problem with excellent quality drinking water. The desalination unit, which was established in 2024, doubled the water capacity from the existing TEMAK Desalination Plant, which was set up in 2019, improving both the availability and quality of water for the residents and visitors of the area. It ensures the municipality’s autonomy in maintaining a continuous water supply, even during periods of intense drought, as experienced over the last three years.

Year 2020: The First Brackish
Water Treatment System Installation

In 2020, TEMAK successfully completed the construction and installation of a technologically advanced desalination plant, which operates with a desalination unit with a capacity of 200 m³/hour, ensuring a daily production of 4,700 m³ of drinking water.

The main mission of the unit was:
• Improving the water quality from the Anavallos springs, enhancing the quantity and quality of the municipal water supply, which came from the Lerna and Amymoni springs.
• Autonomy in water supply during drought periods, ensuring continuous and uninterrupted operation of the municipality’s water system.
The unit was designed to operate up to 23.5 hours a day, 365 days a year, with an annual production capacity of 1,715,500 m³.

Year 2024: New Water Treatment System Installation and Strengthening the capacity of the Existing System

In 2024, TEMAK proceeded with the installation and commissioning of a new desalination plant next to the existing one, with the same capacity of 200 m³/hour, ensuring an additional daily production of 4,700 m³ of drinking water. The total daily production from both plants reaches 9,400 m³, making it one of the largest desalinated drinking water productions nationwide.

Each plant consists of four (4) portable desalination units, each with a capacity of 50 m³/hour. The operation of the units is based on Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology, ensuring excellent water quality and energy efficiency, with an energy consumption of ≤0.5 kWh per m³ of produced water.

Innovation and Energy Savings

The treatment of the enormous quantities of water from the Anavallos springs, which until a few years ago was lost to the sea, now significantly contributes to the water supply of the Municipality of Argos through processing by TEMAK’s desalination plants.

The portability of the units and their ergonomic design inside 40ft containers facilitate flexible and efficient operation, monitoring, and maintenance. The units are fully autonomous and can be easily transported and installed, while the application of photovoltaic systems included in the new desalination plant contributes to energy savings and reducing the cost of produced water.

The continuous development of infrastructure and the adoption of innovative technologies ensure uninterrupted and safe water supply to each area, promoting the quality of life for citizens, while simultaneously enhancing the environment of each region.
